Microsoft Whiteboard – new version has issues

The new version of Microsoft’s Whiteboard was something I was looking forward to. The tool has been an excellent resource for teaching and I was hoping for some changes to make collaboration and management of the content easier.

That didn’t happen.

  1. I truly understand your experience. I was having high expectation on the new version since I know there would be one. Once I updated the app on my Windows 10 PC today, the more I use, the more I feel disappointed with all the old functions gone.

We update our apps with the hope of getting better usage experience, but the fact is that this app updates to drop the useful functionalities it used to have.

    GOOD:
    Faster app loading
    Better inking
Can move object in front of or to the back of another object
Can insert some preset shapes from the menu, including straight lines, arrow.
    Can insert Reactions & Templates
Easier to move around the board using mouse and keyboard by pressing SPACEBAR

    BAD:
Not stable, asked to refresh but couldn’t show contents unless re-sign in
Unable to insert PDF files, hyperlinks, WORD files, PPT and many more
No copy and paste / cut and paste function
Previously added objects not showing properly
Couldn’t see other users login status*
    Couldn’t see other users cursor*
*(I guess maybe because I’m a free user)
    Highlighter strokes are not smooth
    Zooming speed is slower

    LACKING: object locking/pinning

So, it is a major downgrade on user experience. Microsoft should just launched this as a beta version until they put all the functionalities back.

  2. If you need a web apps for whiteboard, Concept Board and Miro are way better in terms of functionality and user experience.

Lacking copy and paste make it no different from other web apps, but lacking previous useful functions making it worse than those web apps, since the old version is already lacking some features which others have, now the new version is even lacking in features.

    1. I agree – the Microsoft version has limitations that others are much better at addressing. This is especially true if you go web-based. I use Miro and HeyHi quite a bit and plan to use them more.

  3. There is a new board App that one of my YouTube subscribers told me about – I’m going to check it out and try to make a video on it. I’ve used HeyHi and Miro and they are certainly better options as well. Maybe Microsoft will see all the feedback and fix things. We can hope!

  4. Hi Frank – I want people to learn how to use whiteboard by doing a range of fun activities so they learn about the features – do you have have some fun games I could use please, which you’d be prepared to share – thank you

    1. Yikes! I’m very sorry, I didn’t see this comment.
The new Microsoft Whiteboard has some excellent Learning templates for games
