Back in the early days of the Internet (yeah..I was there), we used to speak about the promise of how the Internet would revolutionize education, learning, and bring out the best in people.
It’s hard not to be a little cynical about the years since those dreamer days, but the Internet has made learning, teaching, and experiencing the world much better. Research is more accessible (if we know how), we can collaborate more effectively (if we choose to), and we can leverage the power of information access to make the world a better place (if we choose to)
It’s time for another shift: the Metaverse. Or, cool name aside: a Virtual 360 Immersive and Interactive Environment. I’ll stick to Metaverse for now.
Of course, I am very interested in this. I’m actually also interested in Augmented Reality – the intersection between real and virtual, but those experiments and development activities are waiting for some hardware that costs a bit more than my little YouTube channel can support at this time!
Augmented Reality and HoloLens development aside, we are now at a technical turning point where VR headsets are low enough in cost and robust enough in content to make their use in education very viable.
I’ve created an introduction to 5 ways we can use VR (the Metaverse) in education.
