Technology as an enabling tool in education is far from a new idea. The ability to leverage technology to assist in the learning process is a vast topic – and one that is at the heart of the majority of my writing, my teaching, and my YouTube Channel.
Placing structure before toolsets is important. The way we create a flow to learning activities will help us ion ensuring that we can select the correct technology for the stage of learning we are at.

By creating a process – or stages of work – to the learning we are working on, I think that we can then make better technology decisions on how to effectively use technology in learning.
As an example, I’ve seen many note-taking Applications on the market – with all sorts of features. Having more than one place where you take notes is counter-productive though. We want a simple place to place the information we collect so that we can organize it in one system and then develop our understanding from it.
This past weekend, I finished creating a course on SkillShare where I offer some guidance on Productive Learning with Technology.
If you have a SkillShare account, I hope you’ll check it out. If you don’t have an account – you can still check it out as they give you 30-days or so for free (and many other courses). SkillShare is actually a good deal as it’s not very expensive if you do decide to sign-up afterwards.
It was fun to create this course because it also caused me to re-examine my ideas around building a system for learning with technology – as opposed to focusing on the technologies alone.
I’m sure I’ll still focus on technologies though! 🙂
