Every year when school is about to start – I’m asked about whether I think people need a new computer for school.
This used to be a much easier question to answer. My rough rule of thumb was a new PC every 3 years, and a new Mac every 5 years. While this wasn’t a perfect answer and it still required some additional probing questions, it was a rough way of ensuring that the computer being used was powerful enough to accomplish the tasks that most students would need it for.
This has drastically changed. The way we use computers has drastically changed because of technologies such as Cloud Services and Virtualization.
