The advancement of AI technology has brought numerous promises. We’ve been told that AI will make us more productive by “doing jobs for us” – but is that completely true?
My experience with AI suggests that the best use of AI is to reduce time-to-delivery on projects and work that, ultimately, requires the human touch to complete.
That stated, it is amazing how powerful AI is – and in this post, I wanted to share some experiences I’ve had in using AI to help build online courses.
*note: I’m writing this from scratch – no AI here 🙂
Experimenting with AI Course Creator
Recently, I was offered the opportunity to work with eSkilled AI Course Creator on a YouTube video. This allows me to build a course and demonstrate the use of the tool to build out a pretty comprehensive online course.
What I learned
There were some takeaways from this experience.
- The speed at which I was able to create a course was impressive
- The course benefited from providing some documents such as a course outline, core competencies, and such.
- The objectives required some editing – the use of words such as “understand” in course objectives is not a best practice.
- The tool allows for editing and it is important to go through each module step-by-step to ensure everything is correct. This was especially the case with some case-studies that failed to format correctly
- The regionalization of the case-studies was especially impressive and will lead to better students engagement
The results were extremely useful and interesting
The results of the AI generated content was impressive and useful. I was amazed at how the structure and content was in line with what I would expect of an online course.
What I did next
My next step after my initial course creation in the video above was to create a course that I plan to edit and use in my teaching. A course on Critical Thinking.
This will be a course that I develop over time, but you can check it out as I build it. The main body and structure took a little bit the generate, and now I am adding media.
How will I use AI Course Creator in the Future?
I don’t see the tool replacing all teaching! However, I can see using the tool as a way to create some “micro-courses” on specific subject areas to support my classroom.
There are always students that struggle with certain concepts, and we see the same questions asked over and over again.
Something I would like to try is to connect to an LMS and to export SCORM files – for this, I will need an annual subscription – so that will have to wait for now.
Creating an online course to support self-efficacy and agency is something I think will be valuable.
